Women, Leadership and the Citizen Professional – Future Cities Catapult Lunchtime Lecture 22nd June 2016 1-2pm

Our Urbanistas Founder, Liane Hartley is giving a lunchtime lecture at Future Cities Catapult, London on Wednesday 22nd June 2016 1-2pm on “Women, Leadership and the Citizen Professional”.

In this informal talk, Liane will talk about how a new form of leadership, collaborative empowerment, is emerging in city and place-making and tell the story of how she became an ‘accidental leader’. Using examples from Detroit and Mexico City among others, she will describe how ‘DIY urbanism’, a collaborative approach to city development and design based on social drivers, is changing how decisions are made in and about cities.  She will describe the importance of creating ‘citizen professionals’, enabling citizens to fully take part in decisions about place-making.  And, drawing on her work with Urbanistas UK, she will urge women to grasp opportunities for collaborative leadership.

Visit Future Cities Catapult here to book your ticket and get more details on the event.

Urbanistas London Expo #17

UrbanistasLDN are excited to be hosting our Expo #17 on 16th June 2016.

Tickets are now available here:

We have two super pitches lined up for you and we are sure there will be healthy debate, chance to get to know new faces and maybe even… ahem… Breferendum chat.

Pitch 1 will be from Urbanista Sarah Bell, a Senior Lecturer at UCL in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Sarah will talk about her proposal to expand the existing UCL Engineering Exchange, which facilitates engagement between local community groups and engineers, by working with major contractors and consultancies. Sarah will also kick-start what we hope will be a lively discussion about the links between industry and academia.

Pitch 2 will be from Urbanista Emma Kent, an Associate at Cundall and also one of the Chapter Leaders for UrbanistasLDN. Emma will be breaking the taboo to talk about getting old and how the built environment sector might respond to a hugely increasing aging population in order to maximise quality of life and wellbeing. Emma would like to test out a possible business model on the Urbanistas group and get feedback, contacts, ideas and constructive criticism on the project so far.

We will also have our usual opportunity to introduce ourselves, get to know each other, network and debate.

We are excited to be hosting our Expo at the offices of Quod in Soho, home to Chapter Leader Charlotte.

We look forward to seeing you there.
